Here's a look at the process of the American Cement Building painted in 2013. 36"x24".  Process of a drawing of the Seagram Building in New York City from a commission earlier this year from a local architect/developer. The integral plaza, building, stone faced lobby and distinctive glass and bronze exterior were designed by German-American architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and completed in 1958 at 38 stories and it is one of the most notable examples of the functionalist aesthetic and a noted example of corporate modern architecture. Finished drawing size is 11”w x 17”h.  A look at the process of the TG&TC Building on Pershing Square in downtown Los Angeles. This beautiful Art Deco building was built in 1930 and designed by The Parkinsons who also designed Los Angeles City Hall and Bullocks Wilshire. In 1984 the building was listed the Nation Register of Historic Places. This sold painting is now living in Rancho Santa Fe, California.  Attended a talk with #boomerangformodern by Roman de Salvo about his latest installation, Electric Picnic, at the Timkin Museum on July 8. Roman de Salvo is a contemporary American s sculptor whose work infuses the every day with surprising effect and intrigue. His art is characterized by the inventive use of ordinary materials and objects often involving energetic phenomena such as wind, water, fire, electricity, and audience participation. As part of the Timken Museum of Art’s summer artist-in-residence program, de Salvo has created the Electric Picnic sculpture based on the picturesque, Rococo-era, Blindman’s Buff (1775-80) by Jean Honoré Fragonard, which is part of the Museum’s permanent collection. De Salvo’s residency starts at the beginning of June, and the Electric Picnic sculpture is on display at the Timken June 28 through August 25, 2019. Quick look at the process of Cityscape (60"x36") painted in 2015 and is currently living in Chicago, Illinois.  Process of a drawing of the Pan Am (Met Life) Building from a commission earlier this year from a local architect/developer. He wanted a version with the old Pan Am signage instead of the current Met Life from a photograph he provided. An iconic International Style skyscraper from 1963 and remains one of the 100 tallest building in the US at 59 stories.   Wonderful stay at William Cody’s Del Marcos. Originally designed for owners Samuel and Adele Marcus, the building is historically important because it was Cody™s first independent commission in Palm Springs, and launched his solo career in the desert. Amazing, friendly place and highly recommended!   Morning walk...       Outstanding show of architect Hugh Kaptur at the Palm Springs Architecture Museum who practiced in Palm Springs and the surrounding Coachella Valley area from the late 1950s through the early 2000s. Love the models!   Happy hour at Paul Bar/Food...  Flashing a bit of #jewelrybill work.  The General Motors Building in New York City is one of a series of graphite drawings produced from images taken from screen captures on G-maps (gm). Some are taken from street view while others are taken from above with the 3D function creating some interesting perspectives.  Little Tokyo is bordered by the Los Angeles River to the east, downtown Los Angeles to the west, LA City Hall and the Parker Center to the north, and the newly named Arts District (made up of warehouses converted into live-work lofts) to the south. It seems to be on the road to gentrification with so many new upscale residential buildings. A few examples of art on the street.
A visit to Hauser & Wirth on Third Street,
A stop at the amazing Bradbury Building. Built in 1893, the five-story office building is best known for its extraordinary skylit atrium of access walkways, stairs and elevators, and their ornate ironwork. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971, and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1977, one of only four office buildings in Los Angeles to be so honored. It was also designated a landmark by the Los Angeles Cultural Heritage Commission and is the city's oldest landmarked building. I strongly suggest a visit if you're in the neighborhood!
On to the Biltmore. Upon its grand opening in 1923, the Los Angeles Biltmore was the largest hotel west of Chicago, Illinois in the United States. In 1969 the Biltmore Hotel was designated a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument by the City of Los Angeles.
The Broad, Grand Central Market, Disney Hall, Angels Flight and Los Angeles City Hall wraps up the visit before Union Station and the train trip home.
